fourteen poems by
Michael John Garces

			materials:
				body
				light
			on wood, line.

note:

a template, perhaps.

a point of departure.

an indication.

the event?
…in 14 crucial steps
from undiluted white to sullied black…

something has to happen.
something that already has.

.1. (Jesus is condemned)

strong down align down
forth:

irredemption.

and
words
are clench (tensing)

aside-
cripple askance
	across

and
against:
no.

are like

.2. (Jesus takes up his cross)

not use the word
not miss-
the wood
thrown flat athwart horizon line

stained
in kind,
given voice
in progression from
use to use

until this last use:
the word,
not used.

.3. (Jesus falls first time)

no life in suffering
no suffering
no life in suffering
no life

what end:
the history of what was
when end.
suffered to upend:
history
in life/
no life.

no suffering in life
no suffering in life
no suffering in life
no

.4. (Jesus meets his mother)

yes
but what
(align: damage)
when flat but not level
flexed against the eye-symmetry
ordered in lock half-
step
across from a side to itself a journey;
unmind
the black horizon:
it is there.
speak of it.
it is there.

when flat but broken forth
when momentum gathers inertia
when flat when toothed raw
when spoken,
what is spoken.

it is there
who were
who were once
in kind
of from once
can but:
it is there.

.5. (Simon helps him carry the cross)

the word
against
everything thought
everything spoken
everything done
out of

the word

.6. (Veronica wipes his face)

chance
in the knot
of knowing
never tied laid loose

in the knot of seeing
never untied / severed, whole

in the knot
of touching
that we may remain
complete
in the eyes
remain
athwart the back
intact.

fingers fray
end to end
as we ravel
as we ravel
end to end
unraveling,
renewing knots
at end
to loose.

.7. (Jesus falls second time)

what word:
when?
(crude in the mirror the body the flesh)
what said?
the greater part of white:
what is white in white)
what heard,
what thought,
what miss-
heard,
that could
in subsequence
(but yet then:
the greater part of black:
what is black in white:
lesser of two,
and more)
be said?

the mirror posits the body,
what is of it
in white

.8. (Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem)

what is suffered to know:
what suffering is,
is not
what has been thought,
and all of thought there is
to know.

.9. (Jesus falls third time)

another horizon,
black,
on this side of another:
the shut mirror behind planing over away bending
as if

and closed and fallen away and
another horizon, and
black
on a black horizon
over what can be seen
over to what
can be

there, over

.10. (Jesus is stripped)

have done nothing
have done nothing
no doing
- insuffering -
what done in the word?
nothing.

nothing to suffer
suffering nothing
to mitigate
nothing
in suffering-

.11. (Jesus is nailed to the cross)

introduce:
wood
mirror.
introduce:
eyes line back down
horizon,
black/
white.

fingers fray, mirrored
in wood.

introduce:
suffering,
introduce to

mirror,
wood.

12. (Jesus dies on the cross)

still

	as if
horizon up swept through
slight eye
as if against
back held weak
against as if
you

still

you
as if the back
bent against wood
as if
the breaking horizon
	against

still

.13. (Jesus is taken down)

darkward

what not heard dead level reaches
silence
rising to
match the horizon (shifting
to side
aslant - skewing vortices

bent light

vertical force uprisen)

through and under to
where : it
…
every
last
under wood under the eye
back burdens body
grooved by use to flesh raw and the torn within
 - fingers fail the eye fails the back -
by use to where
suffering
and the word
dead level reach the horizon - black -

suffering (and the word) reach
what said
dead under wood under eye
- white, what
said under and shifting to match
what said what shut
the mirrored slowly and
the back down slowly and

slowly
	darkward

break: horizon.

what said:

.14. (Jesus placed in the tomb)

ingathered words
cast out
less breath less
the orient warp of wood
splint
splintering
splint
breaking the horizon the eye

…fingers splinter…

the eye?
(what else what could

the back the
..?)

horizons meet
broken
black to
suffering damage
white
splintered shards mirrored
(have
have not
did)
verticality at the last:

met

twin spun entwined

spliced on wood in mirror

yet, as if

. horizonless
